Did you know that more than 33% of people in the United States have tried CBD at some point? CBD is a very popular substance since it is not as regulated as THC. You can find it in all sorts of stores across the country and you can even buy it online.

One question many cannabis users want to know is does CBD show up on a drug test? CBD is full of antioxidants, other healthy components and it does not produce a psychoactive high when consumed. While THC certainly shows up on drug tests, CBD products may be a different story.

Does CBD Show Up on a Drug Test?

The Cannabis plant has many unique cannabinoids and plant compounds in its physical makeup. Despite this, most commonly patients interact with the main two cannabinoids, “THC” (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and “CBD” (Cannabidiol).

You might think that CBD will show up on a drug test since both THC and CBD come from the same plant. Fortunately, CBD will not cause you to fail a drug test and CBD will not even show up on your test results.

Most drug tests only test for THC as THC is the more regulated psychoactive compound. THC is attributed to producing Cannabis’ “High”. Since CBD is a separate and unique cannabinoid of its own, products containing only CBD (or CBD Distillate) will not test positive for THC.

However, this is only the case with pure CBD. There are some CBD products that may contain trace amounts of THC. CBD products are legally allowed to have up to 0.3% of THC.

Keep in mind that this amount is too small to produce a psychoactive high. Even though this is a very small amount, it may still be enough to show up in a drug test that is testing for any trace of THC in your system. If so, that drug test will come back positive for THC and you might fail the drug test as a result.

Overall, passing or failing a drug test will depend on the specific type of CBD product you use. Mainly whether it has trace amounts of THC or only CBD. Note, that this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to keep from using CBD at all before a drug test. Instead, you will need to be a bit more careful when it comes to the CBD products that you choose.

There are many types of CBD products that you can buy from stores and online. For example, CBD oil, gummies, vapes, and more are all very popular options. Take CBD oil, for example.

Understanding CBD Oil

There are two main types of CBD oil: full-spectrum CBD and broad-spectrum CBD. Full-spectrum CBD always has THC in it along with other plant compounds like terpenes, plant fats, and so on. Broad-spectrum usually does not have any THC in it, but this is not always true.

Some CBD brands may put trace amounts of THC in broad-spectrum CBD oil. For that reason, when buying this kind of oil, you’ll have to double-check that there is no THC in it if you have a drug test coming up.

Also there is CBD isolate, which is in a crystalline form rather than an oil form. CBD isolate is pure CBD and does not contain any other cannabinoids or other components from the cannabis or hemp plants. For that reason, you can take all the CBD isolate you want and you’ll never need to worry about failing your drug test.

CBD isolate is versatile and you can mix it with carrier oils or other ingredients so you can use it in different ways.

How To Make Sure You Pass Your Drug Test

As long as you use CBD without any THC in it, you should pass your drug test without any problems. However, you may accidentally expose yourself to THC without even knowing it — causing you to fail your drug test. For example, you may think you’re buying a pure CBD product but it actually has trace amounts of THC in it.

This is why it’s important to always check what kind of product you’re buying. There is also the case of cross-contamination involving THC. This is not very common, but can happen if you buy your CBD where cannabis products are handled.

There is also the case of secondhand smoke involving cannabis. If you happen to be around a person smoking cannabis, you may end up inhaling some of the cannabis smoke.

This may lead to failing your drug test due to the small amount of THC in your system from inhaling the secondhand smoke. Keep in mind that this is a very rare occurrence, but it can happen. For that reason, it is best to stay away from people smoking cannabis until after your drug test.

There is also the rare occurrence of a false positive. There is a small possibility that eating CBD will cause your stomach acid to break the CBD down into very small concentrations of THC. This may cause you to fail a drug test.

When it comes to drug tests, CBD shouldn’t show up since most tests are only testing for THC, not CBD. Still, you will need to be careful when consuming certain CBD products since some products may contain trace amounts of THC.

As long as you check the product before you buy it to ensure that there is no THC present, you should be fine. To learn more about CBD and other cannabis products, click here.
