Once you’ve been approved and received your medical marijuana certification, the next step is to begin your patient application with the state. Begin by creating an account on the Iowa DPH and fill out all necessary information. 

Additionally, there is a non-refundable $100 government fee that must be paid as part of the application process.

Once your application is complete, Iowa’s Medical Cannabis Program typically takes between 3 to 5 days for processing (if submitted online). Upon approval, you’ll be able to immediately access and print your digital Iowa Medical Marijuana Card. 

You can renew your ID card up to 60 days before its expiration date. The renewal process requires submitting the patient registry application form, a new Physician Written Certification, a photocopy of your Iowa-issued driver’s license or state ID, and payment of nonrefundable application fees. 

Patients must be re-certified annually by a licensed medical marijuana doctor in Iowa. You do not need to go back to the same medical cannabis doctor in Iowa who initially certified you.

Caregivers must also register with the state of Iowa to obtain a registry card permitting them to possess and dispense medical marijuana on behalf of their patient.

To become a designated caregiver, applicants must complete the designated caregiver application. This card is necessary for parents or legal guardians to purchase medical marijuana for minors, as patients under 18 cannot directly buy from dispensaries.

The registration fee for caregivers is $25.

Out-of-state medical marijuana patients can use medical cannabis but are not permitted to purchase from any Iowa state-licensed dispensary. Patients must have a valid, unexpired medical marijuana card from their home state.
