  1. Patients receive a 90-day recommendation divided into two 45-day fill periods.

  2. Within each 45-day period, patients can purchase up to a 45-day supply.

  3. If a patient uses up their 45-day supply, they must wait for the next 45-day period to buy more.

  4. Patients can buy less than the full 45-day supply if they choose.

You can renew your ID card up to 30 days before its expiration date. The renewal process is a 2-step process similar to your initial process. 

Patients must receive a new recommendation from a doctor. Once this recommendation is received, sign in to your Ohio registry account and pay the state registration fee. Then, you’ll be able to access your new medical marijuana registry card.

  • Non-medical cannabis is not yet available to purchase in licensed dispensaries. Ohio has not given any individuals or entities licenses to sell non-medical cannabis at this time.
  • Possession limits for non-medical patients is 15 grams of extract and 2.5 ounces of another form. This is significantly lower than medical patients.
  • The ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives) has stated that an individual who is a current user of marijuana, recreational or medicinal, is federally defined as an “unlawful user” of a controlled substance under federal law. This means individuals using cannabis cannot possess, receive, ship, or transport firearms or ammunition.

Ohio allows medical marijuana patients to designate a caregiver. Caregivers must be registered in the Ohio registry by the doctor who recommended medical marijuana for the patient. The caregiver will receive a link to register and will also have to pay a $25 application fee.

The process may take up to 7 business days to complete, as Ohio must confirm your eligibility to become a caregiver.

Once you have been approved as a caregiver, you will receive an email notifying you that you have been approved.

At this time, reciprocity is not specified in Ohio. However, patients holding an Ohio medical marijuana card have reported successful usage in both Washington D.C. dispensaries and certain dispensaries in Nevada.
