It is a common misconception among medical marijuana card holders that the more doses of cannabis that you take, the better you feel.
However, studies have suggested that this may not be the case. In fact, less may be more! Using a method called micro-dosing can drastically affect the ability of a patient to maintain a balanced tolerance level, and function normally throughout the day.
Micro, the opposite of macro, means small. In reference to medicine, it means taking smaller doses of cannabis, sometimes more frequently. Micro-dosing is usually achieved by taking a small dose of medicine, and waiting to see the effects on your body. If you don’t begin to feel the effects after a specified period of time, another dose is taken. You then stop once you have reached the precise dosage.
Every patient has a different level of pain, anxiety, or other medical issues requiring a cannabis treatment plan. Dosage is not simply based on how much you weigh, or your height. It is also pertinent to pain tolerance levels. The goal is to provide the proper dosage for psychoactivity to symptom reduction. This means that you gain the benefits of your cannabis, but don’t experience the psychoactive side effects.
According to Dr. Justin Sulak, a well-respected cannabis doctor, the goal is to receive the optimum health benefits of cannabis for a longer period of time, without creating a high tolerance level for THC. This is important, because often people who are on a cannabis treatment plan may be on it for life. In a recent article, he states:
“I discovered that most people have a certain threshold dosage of cannabis, below which they’ll actually experience a gradual increase in health benefits over time, and above which they’ll start building tolerance, experiencing diminishing benefits, and more side effects.”
This means that if cannabis amounts can be decreased, the patient may experience the optimum benefits for a longer length of time without the body becoming used to the cannabis. Experiencing high psychoactive properties from cannabis can create the need for the cannabis dosage to be significantly increased over time.
In other words, being “higher” may not necessarily be the answer, particularly if the patient wishes to work, play, and lead as normal of a life as they can.
For people who are worried that they are already dosing too much cannabis, and often feel the psychoactive effects of THC, there is still hope. It’s possible for them to reduce their dosage over time, as well as switch to lower doses of THC and higher doses of CBD, which can be more effective for them.
According to Dr. Sulak, his patients in New England have actually benefited from micro-dosing, while experiencing fewer side effects. Micro-dosing, as opposed to flooding the system with psychoactive cannabinoids, led to more improvements in the discomfort of the patient. Dr. Sulak also notes that in addition to improving their health and mental acuity, micro-dosing can save the patient a lot of money.
While it may take an adjustment period to get some patients accustomed to a micro-dosing routine, in the long run, this method of cannabis use will leave patients feeling healthier and more balanced.
